Alcohol Anonymous
Alcoholics Anonymous is commonly known as the AA group or simply AA. It was founded in 1935, with Bill Wilson and Bob Smith Jr. holding the position of co-founders. The Twelve Traditions are a guideline to keep running an effective meeting that promotes fellowship and self-improvement for those who attend meetings. Alcoholics Anonymous is a program designed to stop addiction, and recover from addiction, and can help ensure that there is no relapse into addiction when members meet on their own to create sober lives for themselves so they can live productive lives again.
What is a Double Winner?
What does it mean to be a double winner?
“You are a double winner—a winner of life and a winner of sobriety. You have won the inner victory that comes from spiritual awakening. You have awakened to the fact that you cannot drink yourself to death, but instead, you must stop drinking forever.” This is what Bill Wilson wrote in “Alcoholics Anonymous” magazine.
A double winner is a person suffering from one or more addictions. He or she might be an alcoholic, drug addict, overeater, gambler, or even a compulsive shoplifter. More than likely, he or she is a recovering alcoholic. Double winners faces a difficult challenge—how to keep their addiction from returning.
To live a productive life, the double winner has first to stop drinking alcohol or using drugs and other harmful habits. To recover from addiction, he or she must remain abstinent from these habits. When the double winner has stopped making use of these habits, then that person can begin to build a new life and develop success in recovery with help from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).
The first step in living a sober life is to stop drinking. The first step in staying clean is to avoid the things that trigger your addiction. If you are addicted to alcohol, then you avoid alcohol. If you are addicted to crack, then you stay away from crack. The second step is not to return to your addiction. This is what it means to be a double winner—live a sober life, and remain sober for the rest of your life.
The double winner needs help from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) because the double winner cannot remain sober alone. AA has been helping people like this for more than 70 years in over 120 countries around the world.
